Rising Stars Shine: Northern Ireland’s Aidan Walsh and Africa’s Joseph Commey Secure Spots at Boxing World Qualifier

Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament for 2024

Aidan Walsh, a bronze medalist in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics from Northern Ireland, made a triumphant return to boxing with a convincing win at the 2024 Boxing 2nd World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. In the men’s 71kg category, Walsh outperformed Youcef Yaiche of Algeria and secured a split decision victory to advance to the last-16.

Walsh had taken a break from boxing due to mental health issues but made a successful comeback with the goal of competing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His impressive performance at the first World Qualifier in Italy was promising, and he continued his winning streak in Bangkok.

On Day 5, Brazil’s Wanderson de Oliveira also triumphed by overpowering Zambia’s Steven Zimba with a unanimous 5-0 victory in the same weight category as Walsh. De Oliveira had previously defeated Walsh at the previous World Qualifier and proved his skill and determination once again.

Despite some setbacks, Africa celebrated a victory with Ghanian lightweight champion Joseph Commey defeating Kabengela Ntumba of Democratic Republic of Congo with a close split decision win at 63.5kg. The competition featured intense matchups and impressive performances from athletes around the world as they vied for a chance to qualify for the prestigious event.

Overall, the tournament showcased exceptional skills and determination from all participants as they fought for their place on the international stage.
