Columbia Central Junior Named Top Sprinter and Hurdler in Jackson-area Spring Sports

On May 10, 2024, the Dome Classic Track Invitational took place at East Jackson High School in Jackson. The women’s 1600 meter race was the highlight of the event, and Columbia Central’s Melyssa McJennett stood out as the top spring sports junior in the Jackson area.

Throughout the season, McJennett displayed her skills in sprints, hurdles, and long jump, earning multiple first-place finishes in various events. Her impressive performance qualified her to compete in the Division 3 state meet in the 100 hurdles, with a qualifying time of 17.03 at the regional meet in Hillsdale.

McJennett received an overwhelming amount of support from fans and fellow athletes alike, receiving 53.51% of the vote to earn the title of top spring sports junior. Leslie soccer player Lily Smieska came in second place while Addison sprinter and hurdler Molly Brown finished third. This recognition highlights McJennett’s talent and dedication to her athletic pursuits.

The success of McJennett serves as an inspiration to many young athletes in the Jackson area, demonstrating that hard work and determination can lead to great achievements. With this recognition under her belt, McJennett is sure to continue pushing herself to new heights on and off the track.
