Team Leaders Ink Defensive Tackle Johnny Newton, a 2nd-Round Draft Selection

On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders signed cornerback Mike Sainristil to a four-year rookie contract before kicking off their three-day minicamp. The following day, they welcomed defensive tackle Johnny Newton to the team after he signed his own four-year rookie deal worth $9.757 million. Despite suffering a foot injury during his final collegiate season and undergoing surgery in January, Newton was still named the 2023 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

As the team began minicamp this week, Newton was seen out of his protective boot. Head coach Dan Quinn disclosed that Newton had a similar injury on his opposite foot, which led to another surgery. However, there were no specific timelines set for Newton’s return to full strength. Washington’s training camp is scheduled to begin later next month.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Commanders signed Johnny Newton to a four-year, $9.757 million deal with 86.41% total guaranteed, including a $3.916 million signing bonus. Newton’s salaries for the following years are as follows: 2024 ($795,000), 2025 ($1.238 million), and 2026 ($1.682 million with $800,000 skill, cap, and injury guarantee).
