Rising Resignations: Conservative MPs Bid Farewell Ahead of Elections; Over 80 Announce Retirement Plans

Michael Gove withdraws from Conservative Party leadership race

After the announcement of Parliamentary elections in Great Britain on July 4th, many members of the conservative government faction are resigning from politics. On Friday, long-serving cabinet member Michael Gove announced that he would not be running again. In a detailed letter published on X (formerly Twitter), the 56-year-old expressed that after almost 20 years, it was time to go. Gove has held various cabinet posts since 2010, with brief interruptions, serving as Education Minister, Justice Minister, and Environment Minister, among others. He campaigned for Britain to leave the EU alongside Boris Johnson in 2016 but his own candidacy in the race to succeed the resigned Prime Minister David Cameron soon failed when he turned on Johnson.

Gove is considered one of the most experienced and influential figures in the current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet. However, he is not alone in his decision to leave politics as almost 80 Tory MPs have announced their intention not to run again in total. This marks the largest exodus since World War II. Polls indicate that the Conservatives are facing a bitter defeat in the upcoming parliamentary election.
