Rising Need for Military Rehabilitation: Over 7,200 Injured Soldiers Turn to Defense Department for Help

The Ministry of Defense’s rehabilitation department sees 1.9 billion shekels budget increase

Over 7,200 injured military and security personnel have turned to the rehabilitation department of the Ministry of Defense for help since the beginning of the war. Out of these victims, 95% are reservists under the age of 30. As a result of injuries and combat shock, approximately 30% of these victims have developed psychological problems such as difficulty sleeping, anxiety, depression, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In response to the growing number of victims, the department’s budget has been increased by 1.9 billion shekels from 5.4 billion in 2023 to 7.3 billion this year. Part of this budget is designated to increase the availability of psychological and psychiatric care for those in need. Additionally, funds have been allocated for psychiatrists with experience in treating combat-related mental disorders. The cost per case has increased to 700 shekels from the previous offer of 200 shekels from the Ministry of Defense to specialists.

To provide emotional support, the rehabilitation department has recruited over 400 emotional therapists in recent months. In addition to therapy services, service dogs have also been provided for therapy purposes. A total of 155 dogs have already been given away, with another 140 currently undergoing training for this purpose.
