Rising Anti-Religious Tensions in Dagestan: A Closer Look at Recent Attacks

Several dead after synagogues and churches attacked in Russia

In the Russian Republic of Dagestan, two recent attacks on religious institutions have left many injured and killed. First, an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent were targeted by unknown assailants. A 66-year-old priest was fatally wounded in the church, his throat cut, while a security guard was also killed during the violent incident. Shamil Khadulaev, head of the Dagestan Public Monitoring Committee, shared on Telegram that these incidents are indicative of a rise in anti-religious sentiment in the region.

In addition to the attack on religious institutions, video footage has emerged showing individuals dressed in black shooting at a police vehicle. One police officer lost his life during this incident, with another sustaining injuries. Furthermore, a church in Makhachkala was set ablaze resulting in extensive damage. According to preliminary investigations by Russian sources, three officers were killed and six others injured during an exchange of gunfire between perpetrators and law enforcement.

Two attackers were reportedly killed at the scene while two other suspects were apprehended and removed from a beach area in Makhachkala. The increase in anti-Jewish sentiment in recent months is believed to be contributing to these attacks. One notable incident occurred when a group of enraged individuals stormed the airport in Makhachkala following the arrival of a plane from Israel resulting in injuries to approximately 20 people.

These incidents are not only disturbing but they also highlight the need for greater protection for religious institutions and their staff members. It is important that law enforcement agencies take swift action to identify and apprehend those responsible for these attacks and ensure that justice is served.

Dagestan’s predominantly Muslim population should not be used as an excuse for such acts of violence against other religions. As citizens we must come together to promote tolerance and understanding among different religions and ethnicities. We must hold those responsible accountable for their actions and work towards creating a peaceful society where everyone can coexist without fear or discrimination.

In conclusion, these attacks are deeply concerning and require immediate action from all stakeholders involved. The government should provide adequate security measures to protect religious institutions from such incidents while also working towards addressing underlying issues that contribute to such acts of violence
