RINA Grants AiP for Revolutionary Offshore Green Methanol Production Platform Solution

Approval in Principle Granted to Kindon New Energy Technology Co. by RINA Awards

RINA, a multinational company specializing in inspection, certification, ship classification, and engineering consultancy, has granted Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. Approval in Principle (AiP) for their green methanol offshore production platform solution. This innovative platform produces methanol entirely offshore using renewable CO2 obtained through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology and green hydrogen from offshore wind power water electrolysis technology.

The AiP acknowledges that the methanol produced on this offshore platform meets the highest standards of green methanol production, utilizing DAC technology instead of CO2 from fossil fuels like traditional methods. Luigi Mattera, the Greater China Marine Operations Director at RINA, stated that the company supports a variety of decarbonization technologies. He emphasized that this concept offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and contributes to decarbonization efforts.

The green methanol production process on the platform uses green hydrogen, renewable carbon dioxide from DAC technology, and sustainable electricity. CEO of Kindon New Energy, Wenbo Wang, highlighted that this concept offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and is an essential step towards more environmentally friendly production methods within the marine and offshore industries.

The offshore platform is capable of producing 0.1 MTPA of green methanol through methanol synthesis from hydrogen and carbon dioxide under specific conditions. The platform’s electrical needs are met by green electricity generated from offshore wind power. The system is designed to have interfaces for potential future supplies of green or biomass-derived CO2. Mattera expressed satisfaction in awarding Kindon the AiP, emphasizing that this innovative solution represents a significant advancement towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods within the marine and offshore industries.

In conclusion, RINA has granted Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd Approval in Principle (AiP) for their innovative green methanol offshore production platform solution that utilizes renewable CO2 obtained through Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology and green hydrogen from offshore wind power water electrolysis technology to produce methanol entirely offshore without using traditional fossil fuel-based methods.
