A Portsmouth, Virginia facility is using an AMP ONE system to process 150 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day. The AMP ONE system automatically separates the mixed recyclables and organic materials for further processing without relying on manual labor.
The RDS (Recycling and Disposal Solutions) facility in Portsmouth has over 90% uptime and can divert more than 60% of landfill-bound material when combined with organics management and mixed recyclables sorting systems. This technology helps extend the life of landfills, reduce their environmental impact, and lower disposal costs.
Matanya Horowitz, the founder and CEO of AMP, believes that the success of the Portsmouth facility can serve as a model for other municipalities looking to achieve ambitious diversion targets while reducing processing costs for local governments. Joe Benedetto, president of RDS, explains that RDS is dedicated to adopting advanced technologies to increase recovery and landfill diversion while collecting data for ongoing facility improvement.
In late 2023, RDS completed a new 33,000-square-foot building at its site in Portsmouth where it has offered local recycling services since 2005. The installation of an AMP ONE system at this facility began in late 2023. RDS also operates facilities in Roanoke, Virginia; Greenville, North Carolina; and Athens, Georgia.
