Verizon-ADOT and MAG pilot program recognized for transportation innovation with technology award

In a significant milestone for the transportation industry, Verizon Public Sector has been awarded a Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Award in the Emerging Trends and Technologies category for its pilot program with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa Association of Governments. The pilot program tested a new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in Maricopa County, Arizona.

The award signifies the potential of V2X technology to revolutionize how state and local governments communicate with drivers nationwide. TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business, expressed excitement about the recognition the pilot program received, stating that it demonstrates the viability of V2X technology.

Susan Anderson, Systems Technology Group Manager for ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division, explained that the pilot project’s goal was to test and validate the ability to send critical safety notices to drivers efficiently. This initiative helps prepare for a future where vehicles can interact with transportation infrastructure seamlessly.

During the pilot program, Verizon Public Sector virtualized ADOT’s roadside units (RSUs) and utilized public Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to enhance communication between timely traffic information to drivers. The program ran from December 2021 to May 2022, showcasing the potential of V2X technology in improving transportation systems.
