Revolutionizing Search and Rescue: How Lifeseeker Technology Is Changing the Game

The Lifeseeker device, a new technology developed by CENTUM Research & Technology company in Spain, is revolutionizing search and rescue (SAR) missions. With a maximum range of 32 km, the device can accurately locate active mobile phones within a radius of less than 5 km. Designed specifically for SAR helicopters, Lifeseeker acts as a miniature cell tower that can contact missing persons even in areas with no or limited cell phone service.

Dr. Tim Durkin, search and rescue program coordinator for Colorado Highland Helicopters, explained how the device works. “When we detect a phone, it shows up as a small dot on the map. As we fly around the area, the dot gets smaller and smaller until we know exactly where they are. The process of detecting and focusing on a specific location takes about a minute,” he said.

The technology was tested in La Plata Canyon in Colorado, which is surrounded by 3,658 m and 3,962 m peaks on both sides with dense forest. In the past, some missions went on for weeks without finding the missing person, eventually forcing the search to stop. However, Lifeseeker was able to locate two missing people within 2 minutes and 14 seconds of activation.

Durkin praised the technology’s ability to work in challenging environments such as La Plata Canyon. “The auxiliary technology to see them is very difficult, almost impossible,” he said. This makes Lifeseeker an important tool for SAR teams around the world who need to find missing people quickly and efficiently.
