Revolutionizing Safety Management: HMM’s Deep Eyes AI Solution to Detect Emergencies on VLCCs

AI technology improves maritime safety using HMM

GlobeAI, a startup founded by professors from Chung-Ang University, has developed an advanced AI image analysis solution called ‘Deep Eyes’. This technology is aimed at enhancing safety management throughout HMM’s fleet. Deep Eyes integrates AI image analysis capabilities into CCTV systems to detect emergencies such as fires, smoke, safety gear non-compliance, and falls, with the ability to promptly alert management.

HMM Co., South Korea’s leading sea carrier, has announced the adoption of Deep Eyes technology to improve safety management across its fleet. The system will first be installed on a 24,000 TEU class container ship scheduled for next month. This is the largest vessel in the world and will cover 15 critical areas, including the engine room and deck.

Despite the immense size of very large ships that can be compared to 3 to 4 soccer fields, they typically only accommodate 23 to 25 crew members. Traditionally, shipping companies have used standard CCTV to monitor the interiors and exteriors of these vessels. However, the absence of notification features in current CCTV systems has presented challenges for effective safety management. With the introduction of Deep Eyes, HMM hopes to have a faster response to safety incidents and aims to prevent secondary accidents.

After an evaluation period, HMM plans to explore the broader application of Deep Eyes technology across its entire fleet. For more information on this innovative solution contact Sang Hoon Sung at uphoon@hankyung.com
