Spotify is taking its AI capabilities to the next level with the introduction of AI-generated playlists. The company has been testing these playlists since October 2023, when reverse engineers Chris Messina and Alessandro Paluzzi discovered code in the app that referenced AI playlists. While Spotify did not comment at the time, they confirmed in December 2023 that they were working on this feature.
The beta version of this new feature allows users to create playlists based on written prompts, going beyond the standard playlist creation requests. Users can now create playlists based on specific prompts such as “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse”. The idea for AI playlists was first mentioned in October 2023 when reverse engineers Chris Messina and Alessandro Paluzzi found code in Spotify’s app that referenced AI playlists. While Spotify did not comment at the time, they confirmed in December 2023 that they were testing AI-generated playlists.
To create the best playlists, Spotify recommends using prompts that combine artists, moods, genres, and decades. The company also takes into account the specific user’s music taste to customize the AI-generated playlists. Users can further refine the playlists by using commands like “more pop” or “less upbeat” after the playlist has been created. Songs can easily be removed from the playlist by swiping left. This new feature is set to revolutionize how users listen to music on Spotify and opens up a whole new world of possibilities for personalized music experiences.
