In a recent announcement on the Made by Google Podcast, Google’s vice president of devices and software services, Seang Chau, confirmed that the generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) model Gemini Nano will be available on the standard version of the Pixel 8 smartphone family in the coming months. This news is expected to start in June, with more Android devices becoming available later in the year through AICore.
Gemini Nano is a small version of Google’s large language models (LLM) and is optimized for running generative AI directly on the device, which it already does on the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Initially, it was announced that this AI model would not be available on the Pixel 8 standard due to hardware limitations. However, both the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 have Tensor G3 processors with different RAM memory capacities as their main difference.
The integration of Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8 signals a step forward in AI technology on mobile devices. The developer preview of Android 14 QPR3 includes features such as ‘Summary’ in the recorder tool and Gboard Smart Reply, providing intelligent responses during conversations. This feature will provide users with an enhanced experience when using their smartphones.
