EOS, a global leader in additive manufacturing technologies, and nLIGHT, a supplier of high-power semiconductor and fiber lasers, have agreed to a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on a joint strategic technology partnership that will bring nLIGHT’s beam shaping lasers to EOS’ metal AM systems. This partnership aims to optimize the additive manufacturing (AM) light engine for robust industrial 3D printing production by integrating complementary laser-based technologies.
nLIGHT’s programmable AFX laser provides seven different beam profiles in a single laser, offering a range of spot sizes for precision contours and faster printing speeds. The AFX laser has shown significant improvements in printing speeds for materials like 316L steel and aluminum, achieving speeds up to three times faster than a standard 400W process.
The collaboration between nLIGHT and EOS aims to offer digitally accessible beam shaping and light engine optimization capabilities through EOS software, allowing customers to choose from various beam profiles. This integration builds upon the existing relationship between the two companies, with AMCM, an EOS Group company focused on customized AM solutions, having already integrated the programmable AFX laser into its metal AM systems.
EOS CEO Marie Langer expressed her excitement about the partnership with nLIGHT and their shared commitment to enhancing the additive manufacturing industry. Meanwhile, Scott Keeney, CEO of nLIGHT, highlighted the importance of integrating their beam shaping and laser technologies into EOS’ metal AM systems to meet customer demands as they continue to evolve.
nLIGHT and EOS aim to release AFX-enabled machines by late-2024, providing enhanced productivity and performance in metal additive manufacturing processes.
