Revolutionizing Fuel Efficiency: New Standards for Heavy-Duty Pickup Trucks and Vans

USDOT Sets Fuel Economy Standards for Model Years 2027-2031

The new fuel economy standards for heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans will save owners over $1,000 in fuel costs over the lifetime of their vehicles. From model years 2024 to 2027, the fuel economy is expected to be approximately 30.4 miles per gallon. Then from model years 2028 to 2031, the fuel economy will increase by 5% per year. These regulations are a part of the Biden administration’s efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality.

The NHTSA estimates that these new fuel economy standards will save American consumers over $133 billion in fuel costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 52 million metric tons over the lifetime of vehicles produced between 2027 and 2031. Environmental groups and consumer advocates have praised these regulations as a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving consumers money. However, some automakers have expressed concerns about the costs of complying with these new regulations and its potential impact on the affordability of vehicles for consumers. Despite these concerns, the NHTSA believes that these new standards are necessary to address the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
