The Premier League has made the decision to introduce semi-automated offside technology starting in the next season. This comes after successful trials that showed a 31-second reduction in the average VAR decision time, much to the delight of match-going fans who are often left waiting during checks.
Using camera footage and tracking software, this new system determines player positions during potential offside situations, eliminating the need for manual judgments by VAR teams. The technology was put to use during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has since been approved for use in English football.
While this technology will streamline the offside decision process, referees may still intervene for certain offside decisions when goals are scored, depending on the complexity of the situation. There are ongoing discussions about whether fans will be able to view footage reviewed by referees simultaneously with officials.
In addition to providing quicker and more consistent placement of virtual offside lines based on optical player tracking, referees will also deliver brief messages on VAR decisions directly to stadium audiences in the upcoming season. This technology is expected to enhance both the in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.
