Reviving the Hummer Sports Park: The Journey to Hosting Postseason Track and Field Meets Again

Latest Project at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka: Cost and Timeline

The Hummer Sports Park in Topeka has been unable to host a postseason track and field meet for the past two seasons due to wear and tear on the track at Weaver-Erwin Stadium. As a result, USD 501 took action and passed an agenda item to repair and resurface the track on May 16. The project began on Tuesday and the resurfacing work is now underway, with completion expected in mid-to-late August.

The development of the track resurfacing project is being led by McConnell and Associates from North Kansas City, Missouri. The estimated cost of the project is $1,213,390, with the majority of the expense going towards improving the steeplechase, javelin, high jump, and long jump pits. Funding for the project is coming from the Hummer Sports Park’s endowment as well as the operations budget of the sports park.

This is not only a restoration project but also an opportunity for Hummer Sports Park to improve its facilities for future track and field events. The school board highlighted concerns about disrupting the infield and potential impact on football field if it was not updated. However, efforts are being made to address these issues and improve facilities for athletes and teams who use them.

Once completed, this renovation will benefit not only local athletes but also attract regional competitions back to Hummer Sports Park. The completion of this project will undoubtedly lead to increased participation in track and field events in Topeka area.

In conclusion, USD 501’s decision to invest in this restoration project shows their commitment towards providing better facilities for athletes while also keeping up with state regulations that require certain standards for hosting competitions at Hummer Sports Park.
