Remembering Danny Wells: A Tribute to a Former West Virginia Sports Editor and Delegate

Danny Wells, a former West Virginia sports editor and delegate, passed away at the age of 84. The West Virginia Democratic Party issued a statement to honor Wells’ legislative contributions. State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin described Wells as someone who brought joy to everything he was involved in and had the ability to make others smile.

Wells was a Democrat who served in the House of Delegates from 2005 to 2014, representing a multi-member district in Kanawha County. Prior to his time in politics, Wells was a columnist and sports writer for the Charleston Gazette from 1962 to 1989. He then worked as the sports editor for the same publication from 1989 to 2001.

In an interview with Charleston Gazette-Mail reporter Michael McQueeney, Wells reflected on his time in the sports section, recalling the lively atmosphere of the newsroom. He expressed gratitude for the 40 years he spent in that environment, highlighting how enjoyable the experience had been. Wells’ spirit and contributions were praised by the Democratic Party, who expressed their condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were impacted by his remarkable life.

Danny Wells’ passing marked the end of an era for those who knew him and worked alongside him. His infectious smile and positive attitude will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Wells’ legacy as a dedicated public servant and passionate sports journalist will always be remembered and cherished.

Wells’ contributions as a former West Virginia sports editor were highlighted by state Democrats in their statement honoring his memory:

“We are saddened by the loss of Danny Wells,” said State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin.

“Danny was someone who brought joy to everything he did,” said Pushkin.

“He had an amazing ability to make people smile,” he added.

Wells’ career spanned over four decades as a sports journalist before he entered politics.

During his time at The Charleston Gazette-Mail, he wrote columns about various sporting events across West Virginia.

After leaving The Gazette-Mail, he continued working as an editor until retirement.

Wells represented District One in Kanawha County during his tenure in office from 2005 until his retirement in 2014.
