Reduce Your Carbon Footprint and Contribute to Sustainability with Recycled Phones on World Earth Day

Vodafone Group is urging people to address the issue of redundant phones for World Earth Day, which falls on April 22. The operator emphasizes that by choosing a recycled device over a new one, individuals can help reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. According to research published in 2022, using recycled models eliminates the need to extract 70kg of raw materials needed to manufacture a new device and results in an annual CO2e reduction of 24.6kg.

Vodafone is not alone in its efforts towards mobile device recycling. Several operators have implemented programs to collect and recycle used phones, including Vodafone’s collaboration with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2022, aimed at collecting 1 million phones and increasing the return of used models through various channels. Additionally, the company has partnerships with organizations like Recommerce and its Vodafone Germany program, which has already collected over 80 tonnes of electronic waste.

In addition to recycling programs, Vodafone also promotes repair programs for mobile devices. Its Spanish unit fixed 100,000 handsets in 2023 alone. Repairing devices instead of replacing them reduces electronic waste and helps preserve natural resources.

World Earth Day was established in 1970 as a global event dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging individuals to take action towards a more sustainable future. The organization collaborates with over 150,000 partners worldwide advocating for positive environmental change on a global scale.
