The American Red Cross is currently seeking licensed health and mental health professionals to volunteer their services in Monroe County. Currently, the county has only one mental health professional serving the area, with no healthcare providers volunteering locally. Nurses, emergency medical technicians, physicians, and other licensed professionals are needed for on-call shifts to assist with disasters in southeast Michigan, including home fires and floods.
In Monroe County, the Red Cross is specifically looking for four to six current or retired state of Michigan licensed health professionals to provide on-call virtual services. These volunteers would commit to one week every month to assist residents who have experienced a disaster. They offer physical and emotional support to individuals during their darkest moments, helping them replace prescription medications, eyeglasses, walkers, wheelchairs, and providing emotional support in the aftermath of a disaster.
Trisha Horvath, volunteer regional and associate divisional nurse lead for the Red Cross emphasized the importance of health and mental health care volunteers in providing support to people in times of crisis. Volunteers with the Red Cross may be eligible to receive continuing education credits for completing training and actively engaging in their volunteer commitment.
