Rattlers Spring Quarterback Battle Takes Spotlight as FAMU Mascot Named Top in Statewide Poll

Florida’s Best College Sports Mascot: FAMU Rattlers

Florida A&M University Rattlers football team is at the center of an ongoing spring quarterback battle as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Rattlers have high hopes for their offense and are known for their tough defense, which led them to a thrilling Celebration Bowl win over Howard in December. They have gained attention from big names like LeBron James, who supplies uniforms and apparel for all Rattler teams.

Meanwhile, a poll was conducted last week to determine the best mascot name in Florida college sports. Florida universities have a variety of unique choices, from the Gators to the Seminoles and even the Hatters. Over 6,700 responses were received, with votes for all 13 Division I teams in the state. Florida State University came in third, Miami Hurricanes in second, and Florida A&M University’s Rattlers claimed the top spot with over half of all responses.

The history of the Rattler mascot dates back to 1891 when the school was relocated to Highwood Plantation, which was full of rattlesnakes. The resilient and gritty nature of the rattlesnake inspired the choice of mascot for FAMU students. The university was previously known as the Wildcats and even briefly as the Flamingos in the 1940s. The iconic rattlesnake logo has become a symbol of pride for Florida A&M University.
