Raising Awareness Through Organ Donation: Independence Health System’s Commitment to the Community

Transforming Lives: April, a Month to Honor Organ Transplant Patients and Support Independence Health System

In April, Independence Health System is recognizing patients waiting for organ donations in honor of Donate Life Month. Participating hospitals include Frick in Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, and Westmoreland in Greensburg. On Friday, a flag-raising ceremony will kick off the month at these locations.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carol Fox believes that the health system is uniquely positioned to inspire the community to become organ donors. By encouraging more people to donate, they can better serve their mission of advocating for the well-being of the entire community.

In addition to the flag-raising ceremony, Independence Health System will also mark Blue and Green Day on April 12th – a national day of recognition for organ donations. Staff members will wear blue and green to work to show their support. A private flag-raising event will also be held at the Butler Memorial Hospital intensive care unit on this day. According to the Center for Organ Recovery Education, over 100,000 individuals nationwide are waiting for organ transplants, with approximately 7,000 of them residing in the state.
