Railway Strike Causes Major Disruptions for Travelers in Italy

Sunday of chaos and inconvenience for travellers as trains go on strike

On Sunday, a national railway strike by Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, and Trenord staff caused significant disruptions to train services across the country. The strike, which lasted until 2am on Monday, was supported by the PDM/PDB National Assembly and led to cancellations and delays for passengers. Since it was a public holiday, there were no guarantee bands in place, making the impact of the strike even more pronounced for travelers. However, Italo trains continued to run as scheduled, providing a reliable option for some passengers.

Trenord reported that only 20% of their trains were running regularly during the strike, with many cancellations and delays exceeding 80 minutes in Lombardy. In Rome, dozens of services to and from Termini station were canceled or delayed by more than 30 minutes. To help mitigate the impact of the strike, Trenitalia sent over 75 thousand messages and emails to passengers ahead of time and received a higher volume of calls than usual at their call center.

In addition to the national railway strike, regional railway staff in Campania also went on strike to demand better working conditions further disrupting train services in that region. Despite these challenges faced by travelers during the strikes efforts were made to provide assistance and information at main stations across Italy to help minimize inconvenience caused by industrial action.
