Former Vice President Rafael Correa has announced that his trusted advisor, Jorge Glas, is on a hunger strike in protest of his arrest. According to Correa, the information was communicated to him by lawyers and the children of the former vice president, who connected with Glas remotely. Defense lawyer Sonia Vera also confirmed that Glas has stopped eating in protest of his detention.
During a conversation recorded by Zoom and published by the lawyer, Glas stated that he is not going to give up and highlighted that the asylum in Mexico did not give him freedom but the dignity of being a politically persecuted person. On Saturday, Ecuadorian elite forces assaulted the Embassy of Mexico in Quito and arrested Glas, who has been held in maximum-security prison ever since.
Meanwhile, former comptroller Carlos Polit is currently on trial in Miami for alleged bribes to Glas. Jose Conceiao Santos, an executive from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, revealed the details of the bribes during testimony at the trial. The money was allegedly channeled through an uncle of the former vice president and sent to a company created in space.
