Quantum Science Takes Center Stage: The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology Initiative

The United Nations Designates 2025 as the Global Year of Quantum Science and Technology

In 2024, the United Nations declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). This initiative aims to raise awareness about quantum science and its applications. The year 2025 holds significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of the development of quantum mechanics, which is supported by various national scientific societies and international unions.

The proposal for IYQ was initiated by Mexico and received endorsement from UNESCO’s Executive Board in May 2023. It was later approved by the UNESCO General Conference in November 2023 with the support of nearly 60 countries. Ghana formally submitted a draft resolution to the U.N. General Assembly in May 2024, leading to the official declaration on June 7, 2024.

The IYQ Steering Committee is responsible for organizing global initiatives and events to engage diverse audiences. The focus is on highlighting the crucial role of quantum science in achieving the U.N.’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The International Year aims to inspire the next generation of quantum pioneers and showcase the impact of quantum science on technology, policy, economy, and culture.
