Protecting Yourself from Mpox: San Diego County Urges Vaccination and Precautions for Upcoming Summer Events”.

San Diego County has experienced an increase in cases of Mpox, prompting public health officials to urge the public to get vaccinated before attending large summer events. In May and June, the county reported seven cases of Mpox, matching the number of new cases reported in Los Angeles.

In 2024, San Diego County typically records just one or two new Mpox cases per month. However, out of the recent cases, four were among individuals who had not received the vaccine. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of receiving both doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to protect against the Mpox virus, especially with the upcoming summer events that could contribute to its spread.

San Diego County experienced an Mpox outbreak in 2022 primarily affecting individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. However, Mpox can affect anyone as it can be transmitted through close physical contact. Symptoms of infection usually include rashes or sores that can last two to four weeks and may cause intense pain, especially in sensitive areas. It is common for individuals with Mpox to experience flu-like symptoms before the appearance of rashes or sores.

The JYNNEOS vaccine is effective in protecting against Mpox and is available at county public health clinics. Individuals can also consult with their healthcare provider, visit myturn.ca.gov or call 211 for assistance in finding the vaccine. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals who have received just one dose of JYNNEOS should get a second dose 28 days later for maximum protection against Mpox virus if 28 days period has passed it is recommended to get it as soon as possible.

It’s important for everyone who plans on attending any large summer event to take precautions such as wearing protective clothing and practicing good hygiene like washing hands regularly and avoiding close physical contact with others when possible.

As we continue through this summer season it is crucial that people stay vigilant about their health and take necessary steps to protect themselves from potential illnesses like MPX by getting vaccinated and taking necessary precautions while attending large events or gatherings
