Protecting Health and Justice: The Reminder from HMO to Provide Medical Care to Hamas Militants

Hospitals reminded by doctors’ union: All patients, including Hamas terrorists, deserve treatment.

The Israeli Medical Association (HMO) has reminded hospitals of the ethical obligation of doctors to provide medical treatment to patients, even if they are Hamas militants. This was stated in a letter sent by the ethics department of HMO to hospital directors. The letter was prompted by protests in different medical institutions when Hamas militants were receiving treatment. According to the letter, the ethics rules of HMO require doctors to provide medical care during armed conflicts, regardless of the patient’s identity. The only consideration that should be taken into account is the patient’s health condition. This approach aligns with international conventions, declarations and Israeli law. Despite their reprehensible actions, Hamas militants must receive necessary assistance from doctors to allow the legal system to bring them to justice. Providing medical care to all individuals, regardless of their background or actions, is a fundamental principle upheld by the medical community.
