Protected Health Information Exposed in Medicaid Security Breach: What You Need to Know

Possible Data Breach at DRW May Have Compromised Health Information

On Friday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) announced a security incident involving one of its partners, Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW). Approximately 19,150 Wisconsinites on Medicaid may have had their protected health information exposed during this incident.

The security breach was detected when suspicious activity was noticed on a DRW email account. Both DHS and DRW are currently investigating the incident to determine the extent of the breach and the information that may have been accessed.

In response to the incident, DRW is taking steps to notify Wisconsin Medicaid members who may have been affected through mail. A dedicated call center has been set up to address any questions or concerns that these individuals may have. Those who have received notification letters or have questions can contact the call center at 888-733-3814 from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., starting June 24.

As a measure to support those affected by the breach and protect their financial security, individuals impacted by the security incident will be offered free credit monitoring for a year. This step is being taken to help safeguard their personal information and ensure that they are not at risk of identity theft or other financial crimes.
