Prompt Medical Care for Hungarian Striker in Euro 2024

Hungary’s Barnabas Vargas received prompt medical treatment when he suffered a head injury during his team’s match against Scotland at Euro 2024, according to Uefa. The striker fractured his cheekbone after a mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, and the game was halted for nearly seven minutes as he received treatment.

Uefa stated that the team doctor intervened within 15 seconds of the incident, followed by a second stadium doctor in line with standard medical procedures. The pitch-side emergency team arrived swiftly with a stretcher to transport Vargas to the hospital. Despite some initial frustration from Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai over the response time of the medical staff, Uefa emphasized that there was no delay in the treatment provided to Vargas.

Szoboszlai later expressed his concern about the protocols in place for handling such incidents and emphasized the importance of quick medical intervention to potentially save lives. Vargas, who scored in an earlier match against Switzerland, will undergo surgery for his fractured cheekbone and is expected to miss the remainder of the tournament.
