Prioritizing Mental Fitness: How Furman College is Helping College Students Stay Healthy and Supportive

Tips for improving mental health and wellbeing from the Trone Center for Mental Fitness

Furman Lake is home to graceful black swans. In May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month, college-age individuals are at a higher risk for various mental health challenges. This has led to an increase in the utilization of mental health resources by college students seeking help and support. The Trone Center for Mental Fitness, established with a $10 million donation from David ’77 and June Trone, offers counseling services to a significant portion of Furman’s student population each year.

To maintain good mental health throughout the year, it is important to prioritize self-care routines that include spending quality time with friends to avoid feelings of isolation, engaging in hobbies that bring joy, practicing deep breathing techniques when feeling stressed, incorporating relaxing activities into daily routines, paying attention to nutrition and hydration, staying physically active in any way possible, maintaining a clean and cozy living space, setting boundaries, socializing with a support system, prioritizing sleep, utilizing mental health apps like Head Space, limiting screen time and spending time outdoors.

Mental fitness requires consistent effort just as physical fitness does. It is essential to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and seek support through hotlines when needed. The Trone Center emphasizes the importance of mental fitness and provides resources for students to improve their wellbeing.
