Powering Safe Deliveries: UNFPA-PAHO Partnership Enhances Healthcare Access in Port-au-Prince Metropolitan Area

Collaborative Efforts by UNFPA and PAHO/WHO to Enhance Maternal Health Care in Haiti

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) are collaborating to improve healthcare access in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area by supporting three hospitals that provide maternal health services. Eliazar Germain Hospital, one of the beneficiaries, has received essential medical equipment and a reliable power supply system from UNFPA and PAHO/WHO to ensure continuous electricity for maternal health care.

Dr. Francito Datus, medical director at Eliazar Germain Hospital, explains that with this support, the hospital can now offer essential obstetric and neonatal care as well as handle emergencies at any time. Josépha, a young mother who recently gave birth to twins via Caesarean section at the hospital, expresses her gratitude for the care she received.

The aim of this partnership is to reduce the cost of childbirth and enable pregnant women to give birth in safe conditions with qualified personnel present. Since its inception, 62 physiological deliveries and 45 Caesarean sections have been performed at the three beneficiary hospitals. UNFPA and PAHO/WHO’s support aims to strengthen capacity for managing deliveries and obstetric complications, ultimately reducing maternal and newborn mortality risks.

In addition to maternity services, UNFPA and PAHO/WHO have expanded their support to address urgent needs in sexual and reproductive health by distributing kits for managing abortion complications and sexual violence in the region.
