Potentially Dangerous Software Malfunction Prompts Stellantis to Recall Over 200,000 SUVs and Pickup Trucks with Defective ESC System

In recent news, Stellantis has announced a recall of 211,581 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that could cause the failure of their electronic stability control systems. The defect is linked to a faulty anti-lock braking system that deactivates the stability control system, which is an essential safety feature in many vehicles. This system helps prevent loss of steering capabilities during emergency situations, such as on icy or flooded roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, using a vehicle with a disabled stability system can increase the risk of a crash. Studies have shown that electronic stability control systems can help reduce fatal collisions, particularly in single-vehicle and rollover crashes. Since 2012, the NHTSA has required all new passenger cars to have an ESC system.

The models being recalled are the 2022 Dodge Durango, 2022 Ram 2500, and 2022 Ram 3500. The Ram 2500 is the most affected, with nearly 158,000 pickups being recalled. A little over 53,000 Durangos and 524 Ram 3500s are also part of the recall. Stellantis plans to notify affected vehicle owners starting in late July, with customers able to bring their vehicles to dealers for a free update to their anti-lock braking systems.
