Porto won the Portuguese Cup on May 26, 2024, but their celebration was cut short when it was announced that coach Sergio Conceicao had left the club after seven years at the helm. Despite recently extending his contract, Conceicao’s departure was precipitated by the arrival of former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas as club president.
Reports suggest that Conceicao may be joining French club Marseille, with his deputy Vitor Bruno rumored to be his possible replacement as Porto boss. During Conceicao’s tenure, Porto won 11 trophies, including three league titles in 2018, 2020, and 2022, along with the recent Portuguese Cup. However, their performance in his last campaign was disappointing, finishing third in the league.
A former Portuguese international winger, Conceicao began his playing career at Porto 30 years ago and also played in Italy with Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan. He retired from playing at Greek club PAOK in 2010 and began his coaching career as an assistant at Belgian club Standard Liege. He has also had coaching stints at various clubs, including Nantes in France, before joining Porto in 2017.
