Portsmouth Sign Promotion Hero Josh Murphy on Three-Year Contract

Murphy departs Oxford to sign with Portsmouth

Portsmouth have signed former Oxford United promotion hero Josh Murphy on a three-year contract, with an option for an additional 12 months. The 29-year-old winger turned down a new deal at Oxford and has officially joined Portsmouth.

Murphy played a pivotal role in Oxford’s promotion as he scored both goals in the League One play-off final against Bolton at Wembley. He previously played in the Championship and Premier League for Norwich City and Cardiff City, bringing a wealth of experience to Portsmouth.

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho praised Murphy’s abilities and expressed his excitement about adding him to the squad. Murphy made 62 appearances for Oxford, scoring 10 goals.

Mousinho faced competition for Murphy’s signature this summer, but his relationship with the player from their time at Oxford played a key role in securing the deal. Despite his inconsistent performances throughout his career, Murphy’s potential to deliver at a high level is evident. Portsmouth will rely on him to make an impact on the wing and fill the void left by the departure of Norwich loanee Abu Kamara.
