Pope Francis Prioritizes Health Over Tradition: Skips Via Crucis Ceremony at Colosseum

Pope Francis opts out of the Via Crucis to safeguard his health during Holy Week festivities.

Pope Francis has opted to prioritize his health and will not attend the traditional Via Crucis ceremony on Good Friday at the Colosseum in Rome. This decision comes after the Pope’s recent delicate health condition, as reported by the Press Office of the Holy See just before the ceremony began. The Vatican stated that Pope Francis would not participate in the Via Crucis to preserve his strength for the remaining Holy Week celebrations, including the Saturday Vigil Mass and Easter Sunday Mass.

The Via Crucis ceremony commemorates Jesus Christ’s passion from his arrest to his crucifixion and burial in a tomb, with 14 stations representing Calvary. Pope Francis typically observes this representation silently without direct participation. This year, he personally wrote the meditations for the ceremony, a task he had entrusted to others in previous years. The representation takes place at night in the Roman Colosseum, and while weather conditions have been a concern due to recent heavy rain and cold temperatures, they have improved in the days leading up to the ceremony.

The Pope’s decision not to deliver a homily on Palm Sunday and limit his public appearances during Holy Week reflects his commitment to maintaining his well-being. Following a recent bout of flu, he experienced respiratory problems that required him to take precautions to avoid any health risks. His absence at the Via Crucis ceremony is significant but does not diminish his presence at other key Holy Week celebrations scheduled for him. His dedication to fulfilling his duties while also caring for himself demonstrates his resilience and compassion towards those who follow him as spiritual leader of billions worldwide.

Despite not attending this important event, Pope Francis remains committed to preserving tradition while prioritizing his health during Holy Week.
