Pope Francis Keeps Health in Mind for Holy Week: Prioritizes Virtual Participation, Condemns Hate and War

Pope Francis cancels Good Friday event at eleventh hour in order to safeguard his health for Easter ceremonies

Pope Francis chose to withdraw from a Good Friday service at the last minute in order to safeguard his health before important Easter events. The 87-year-old pontiff’s health has been closely monitored since undergoing abdominal surgery last year, and recently he has been experiencing bouts of bronchitis, cold, and flu, prompting his aides to read some of his speeches and hospital tests.

Instead of attending the Stations of the Cross service at Rome’s Colosseum in person, Francis chose to view it from his residence. Earlier in the day, he presided over the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at St. Peter’s Basilica. The stations symbolize various stages of Jesus Christ’s suffering and death, with the pope attempting to make relevant connections with modern issues.

In his Good Friday meditations this year, Pope Francis addresses topics such as war, online hatred, and the exploitation of women. He condemns online negativity, emphasizing the need to stop hasty judgment, gossip, and offensive language. The pope also expresses sadness over the effects of war, showing solidarity with those mistreated in a society that overlooks their suffering.

Francis also acknowledges the role of women in Jesus’ story before his crucifixion, and urges the recognition of their dignity. His reflections include a call to empathize with those who continue to suffer exploitation and injustice in today’s world. The pope’s words highlight the importance of standing by those who are demeaned, mistreated or marginalized.
