Polarization Prevails in Slovakia’s Presidential Elections: Who Will Win in the Final Count?

In the second round of Slovakia’s presidential elections, held on Saturday, the deep polarization of the country has been brought to the forefront. Exit polls suggest that it is still uncertain whether pro-European Ivan Korcok or nationalist Peter Pellegrini will emerge victorious until the final results are announced on Sunday.

In recent polls, Pellegrini had a slight lead over Korcok, but voter turnout will determine the outcome. If participation exceeds 52%, Pellegrini may have an advantage as Korcok’s voting potential may have already been exhausted. Korcok surprised many by winning the first round with 45% of the votes, while Pellegrini trailed behind at 37%.

The campaign has focused on European and security issues, with both candidates emphasizing different priorities. Korcok strongly supports the European Union and NATO, while Pellegrini advocates for a sovereign foreign policy to protect national interests and citizens.

European capitals are concerned about the potential implications of a Pellegrini victory, fearing that Slovakia may shift towards a pro-Russian and authoritarian direction similar to Hungary under Viktor Orban. The country is deeply divided, with protests against Fico’s nationalist government and concerns about erosion of democratic norms and rule of law in Slovakia.

Fico’s government has faced criticism for attacking press freedom and pursuing controversial judicial reforms that could undermine the rule of law in Slovakia. The outcome of this election will have significant implications for Slovakia’s future direction and its relationship with Europe.
