Polish Chess Players Excel at 2024 FISU Championship for Mind Sports

The 2024 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports recently took place in Entebbe, Uganda. This event featured competitions in chess and attracted participants from 16 countries.

The second time that Entebbe hosted a FISU event was the cross-country championship in 2014. Poland had a strong showing in the chess competitions, winning three out of four individual titles.

In the women’s blitz event, Poland swept the podium with Julia Antolak winning gold, Liwia Jarocka taking silver, and Anna Kubicka earning bronze. In the women’s classic tournament, Aakanksha Hagawane of India emerged as the gold medal winner, with Saina Salonika finishing in second place and Poland’s Alicja Sliwicka claiming bronze.

On the men’s side, Milosz Szpar of Poland clinched the gold medal in the classic tournament, with Yovann Gatineau and Benjamin Defromont of France finishing in second and third place respectively. Poland also continued their success in the men’s blitz chess event by securing the gold medal through Igor Janik, who finished ahead of Richard Mladek of Czech Republic and Richard Turcan of Slovakia in second and third place respectively.

Overall, it was a week of intense competition in Entebbe as Polish players made a significant impact on the world stage by showcasing their talent on an international level.
