Planet Parade Disappoints but Still Promises an Astonishing Alignment on June 29

NASA’s June 2024 Skywatching Tips: What’s Up?

The idea of a “planet parade” in the morning sky generated excitement in early June. However, it was later discovered that only two out of the six planets mentioned – Saturn and Mars – would actually be visible. Jupiter and Mercury would be below the horizon in morning twilight and not visible to the naked eye. Uranus and Neptune were too faint to see without a telescope, especially as the sky began to brighten.

Despite this, we’ll get a close approximation of a planet parade on June 29 when Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter will line up across the morning sky. This alignment will continue into July as well. For those interested in celestial events, stay tuned for more information on this fascinating astronomical occurrence in the next “What’s Up” video.
