Plan International Urges Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian Authorities to Address Mental Health of Displaced Adolescents Affected by War

Plan International has called on the Ukrainian, Polish, and Romanian authorities to urgently address the mental health of adolescents affected by the war in Ukraine. The organization has released a report highlighting the psychological problems faced by young women and minors, many of whom are displaced. According to the report, 75 percent of young women and minors require help to cope with the psychological impact of the conflict with Russia.

The psychological problems faced by young women also impact their education, leading to high levels of stress and anxiety among affected individuals. The report highlights challenges related to online learning, security concerns in Ukraine, and the need for displaced adolescents to learn a new language in their host country.

Plan International hopes that Ukrainian authorities will implement measures to support adolescents in transitioning back to formal education once security conditions allow. The organization also calls on governments to promote social cohesion in host countries to support the integration of those affected by the conflict.

After more than two years of war, millions of people in Ukraine require humanitarian aid, with millions internally displaced or seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The report also highlights the vulnerability of girls and adolescents to gender violence, noting alarming rates of sexual harassment and assault in Poland and Romania.

Despite these challenges, many young women demonstrate resilience and a commitment to rebuilding a more inclusive Ukraine. Plan International recommends that authorities prioritize the participation of vulnerable groups such as the Roma community, people from the LGBTIQ+ community, and young people with disabilities. Additionally, they call for comprehensive sexuality education and access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls. The organization emphasizes that it is crucial to prevent gender violence and human trafficking by expanding prevention efforts led by national authorities.

As the Ukraine Recovery Conference approaches, Plan International hopes that their report will serve as a call to action for governments around the world. They continue their work supporting those impacted by war, including girls and boys alike while advocating for policies that prioritize their well-being.
