Pioneering Equity: Billie Jean King’s Legacy and the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Impact

50 years ago, Billie Jean King’s $5,000 check played a key role in establishing the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Billie Jean King’s $5,000 award for sportswoman of the year in 1974 sparked the creation of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Since then, the organization has dedicated over $100 million to providing girls and women with opportunities and equality in sports.

King emphasized that the foundation’s mission is to eliminate barriers that prevent girls and women from achieving their athletic dreams. Through research, advocacy, and community programs, WSF strives to ensure equity in sports opportunities, equipment, facilities, and pay. The organization offers programs such as Sports 4 Life for underserved girls, travel and training grants, mentorship, and support for Title IX compliance.

The Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) was established a year after Title IX was passed in 1972. It has been an advocate for gender equality in sports ever since. Recently Vice President Kamala Harris recognized the vital role women play in sports during an event celebrating Women’s History Month. The foundation focuses on growing the coaching pipeline through initiatives like the Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching.

Looking ahead to its 50th anniversary, WSF will host its annual awards dinner on October 16th in New York City to commemorate “50 Years of Changing the Game”. During this event, outstanding athletes will be honored while continuing to promote gender equity in sports.
