Phillies’ Trea Turner Working Hard to Rehab Hamstring Strain, Sosa Shines as Shortstop in his Absence

Turner and Phillies hitting the road, ticking off boxes

Edmundo Sosa has been excelling at the plate as the primary shortstop for the Phillies during Trea Turner’s absence. In his 15 games, Sosa has a batting average of .357 and has hit three doubles, two triples, a home run, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored. Despite not being expected to return in the next two series, Turner is working hard to rehab his hamstring strain and make a comeback.

Turner has been doing distance running, fielding groundballs, and hitting in the batting cage while with the team. The Phillies are gradually increasing his activities and have plans for him to hit early on the field and run at 90% speed. If all goes well, he will run the bases at full speed in San Francisco next week. However, the team is being cautious with Turner’s recovery as hamstring injuries can be tricky and there is a risk of re-aggravation if he returns too quickly.

Manager Rob Thomson expressed confidence in Turner’s progress but emphasized the need for caution to prevent further injury. In Turner’s absence, Sosa has stepped up to fill in as the primary shortstop and has been performing exceptionally well at the plate. If Turner does make a comeback, it will be interesting to see how he performs alongside Sosa who has improved his hitting skills this season compared to previous ones.
