Peyton Manning: Relinquishing the Record-Holding Spotlight for New Young Quarterback Stars

Peyton Manning wants to see rookie interception record surpassed

Peyton Manning, during his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, set a record for throwing 28 interceptions. This number is still the highest for a rookie quarterback. Recently, Manning expressed hope that someone would soon break this record. While speaking at an event in Denver, he said that if a rookie quarterback threw 29 interceptions in a season, he would be happy to relinquish the spotlight to them.

Manning acknowledged that breaking his record would not be easy but expressed a desire to see it happen. He humorously suggested that with the addition of an extra game in the NFL season, rookie quarterbacks may have a better chance at surpassing the 28 interceptions mark. However, despite Manning’s wish for his record to be broken, he emphasized that he did not want Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix to be the one to do it. Manning acknowledged that rookie quarterbacks who throw a high number of interceptions often get benched before setting new records. The closest any rookie has come to breaking Manning’s record is DeShone Kizer, who threw 22 interceptions in 2017.

This season will have several rookie starting quarterbacks in the NFL, but it seems unlikely that any of them will reach the 29-interception mark set by Manning. Rookie quarterbacks will need to find a balance of playing well enough to retain their starting positions while still throwing a significant number of interceptions to challenge this long-standing record. For now, Manning’s record is likely safe.
