Peruvian Spaceport to Revive Ancient Astronomy Practices

What is known about the spaceport project in Peru and its potential impact on the country?

The ancient Peruvians were renowned for their stargazing, whether it was for religious purposes or practical reasons such as establishing calendars, defining time or planning cities. Astronomy was a prevalent practice among them. Now, with the future spaceport to be built in Piura, this age-old tradition could receive a new lease of life.

The Spaceport project has garnered significant attention in recent months. The El Pato air base in Talara has been designated as one of the locations for its establishment. The Private Investment Promotion Agency (Porinversión) is responsible for defining the management and making the project a reality, with the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) and the Ministry of Defense also involved.

The Spaceport project aims to facilitate the launches of rockets and spacecraft for orbital and suborbital flights. Being close to the equator, it is estimated that fuel savings of 30% can be achieved, resulting in increased cargo capacity on the flights.

The space station will consist of ground platforms, a control center, hangars for preparation, integration and validation, as well as taxi and take-off runways, all located in a remote area away from the population. The project is part of the Multiannual Report on Investments in Public-Private Partnerships and Asset Projects (IMIAPP) with an estimated investment of over S/1,000 million.

Apart from facilitating space tourism, the Spaceport project is expected to contribute to technological research and education. Collaborations with NASA and the United States Space Command Commission have provided technical advice and knowledge exchange opportunities which can lead to technology development. Last year, a team of young Peruvian researchers won first place in NASA International Space Apps Challenge with a project called Space Odyssey Planner promoting space tourism and education about the universe. The team highlighted the importance of promoting astronomy in education and how this new space station could inspire a new generation of stargazers just like how ancient Peruvians looked up at stars.

In conclusion, building this spaceport will not only bring economic benefits but also promote scientific research
