Peres Jepchir Sprints to Victory in Women’s Elite Race at London Marathon

Peres Jepchirchir, Olympic champion, sets new women’s only world record in sprinting

Peres Jepchir, an Olympic champion, secured victory in the women’s elite race at the London Marathon on Sunday with an impressive sprint in the closing stages. She crossed the finish line in 2:16:16, breaking the women’s only record of 2:17:01 set by Mary Keitany in 2017 by 45 seconds.

As the race progressed, Olympic silver medallist Brigid Kosgei fell behind the leaders, leaving six women to establish themselves as the front group just after the halfway mark. Tigist Ketema and 2022 champion Yalemzeft Yehualaw were unable to keep up, resulting in a final group of four: Jepchirchir, Assefa, Jepkosgei, and last year’s runner-up Megertu Alemu. In the last kilometer, Alemu was unable to maintain the pace and Jepchirchir used her finishing kick to pull away from the remaining competitors and secure her win.

Meanwhile, in the men’s elite race, Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso Munyao emerged victorious. Kenenisa Bekele finished second at 41 years old. Viewers can watch live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and The official Olympics app for more updates on this exciting event.
