Patrick Murtagh: From Australian Rules Football to the NFL: A Journey through the International Player Pathway Program

Australian TE Patrick Murtagh signs with Jaguars

On Monday, the Jaguars signed Australian tight end Patrick Murtagh to their roster through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. This move allowed Murtagh to join the team without counting against the 90-man limit, and if he doesn’t make the final 53-man roster at the end of the summer, he can be carried as a 17th practice squad player.

Murtagh previously spent time with the Lions last offseason but had to leave due to a medical issue. Following that setback, he participated in a scouting combine in London and trained at IMG Academy in Florida to prepare for his chance with the Jaguars. Before transitioning to the NFL, Murtagh played Australian Rules Football in his home country.

As an international player with a unique background in Australian Rules Football, it will be fascinating to see how Murtagh translates his skills to the American version of the game. The Jaguars have flexibility in working with him even if he doesn’t initially make the team. Through this opportunity provided by the International Player Pathway Program, Murtagh can pursue his dream of playing in the NFL while bringing a new perspective to the team.
