Para Climbing: The Newest Addition to the 2028 Paralympic Sport Program?

LA28 suggests adding paraclimbing to the 2028 Paralympic sport program

In June 2024, the IPC’s Governing Board will review and vote on LA28’s proposal to include Para Climbing in the 2028 Paralympic Sport Program. If approved, Para Climbing will join the Initial Paralympic Sport Program for LA28, which includes a variety of sports such as Blind Football, Goalball, Para Swimming, and Wheelchair Basketball.

Over the past year, LA28 has conducted a thorough evaluation process with input from International Federations and the IPC to gather necessary information for a final proposal. Similar to the criteria used for assessing new sports for the 2028 Olympic Games, LA28 considered global and domestic popularity, universality at major events, and the cost and complexity of the shortlisted sports.

In January 2023, the IPC’s Governing Board approved 22 sports for inclusion in the Paralympic Sport Program. Along with this approval, the IPC also provided a shortlist of sports to LA28 for their consideration in adding a new Paralympic sport.
