The UN Security Council forwards Palestine’s application for membership to the Admission Commission

The UN Security Council has passed on the application submitted by Palestine to become a full member of the UN to the Admission Commission. Highlighting this event as a “historic” milestone, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansur, expressed hope that the Security Council would recognize the global consensus on a two-state solution and admit the State of Palestine as a full member.

The initiative must secure the support of the majority of the 15 Security Council members with no permanent member voting against it for approval. If passed, the General Assembly must then approve membership by two-thirds of the 193 member states, leading the issue back to the Security Council for final acceptance.
