In late February, a 39-year-old woman began experiencing symptoms of tiredness, coughing, and left arm pain. After being diagnosed with moderate heart valve regurgitation by a hospital near her home, she took medication but did not see improvement.

Upon further examination at Hanoi Heart Hospital, the woman was diagnosed with severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation, heart failure, infective endocarditis, and pulmonary hypertension. Her condition worsened rapidly while awaiting surgery, leading to a cardiac and respiratory arrest in early April. The hospital staff worked quickly to resuscitate her, but she fell into a deep coma.

Doctors at the hospital worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition by filtering her blood, administering antibiotics, and lowering her body temperature. After a day of intensive care, it was discovered that she had suffered hypoxia in the cerebral hemispheres and caudate nucleus on both sides. Despite facing complications such as heart failure that was difficult to manage, the woman eventually regained consciousness and was deemed ready for urgent heart surgery.

The surgery was successfully performed in June with the patient showing good progress in her recovery. Infective endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart’s inner lining and valves
