Cold Spring Harbor Jr./Sr. High School has announced that two exceptional science research students, Alexander Grosh and Katie Engel, were chosen to participate in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Partners for the Future Program. Under the guidance of Director of STEM Brian Taylor and school research teacher Jaak Raudsepp, these students were selected based on their strong interest and academic strength in biology, chemistry, or computer science.
The program is highly competitive and selects a limited number of juniors from public and private high schools on Long Island. This year, 15 students were chosen from schools across Long Island. The selection process involves nominations from the science faculty followed by a written application and a personal interview with a CSH Laboratory mentor.
Alexander worked in the Meyer Lab with Rishvanth Kaliappan Prabakar, presenting his research on Lineage Tracing Thymic Epithelial Cells Using SCATAC-seq. Katie worked in the Koo Lab with Peter Koo, presenting her research on Rethinking Initialization Strategies for Deep Learning in Genomics.
Both students showcased their research at the CSHL Grace Auditorium on March 19, highlighting the incredible work they have achieved through their participation in this selective program. Their accomplishments demonstrate the value of hands-on scientific research experience for high school students and inspire others to pursue careers in STEM fields.
